Description

There’s a short piece of film shot on the morning of June 6th, 1944, that captures one of the most chaotic moments of the D‑Day landings. The footage is shaky, raw and completely unfiltered. American soldiers move hurriedly along the base of a cliff. Some crouch behind the shingle while others dash across open sand in the face of heavy fire. Then, suddenly, two men fall, as machine‑gun fire cuts across the frame. The cameraman was Sergeant Richard Taylor of the U.S. Signal Corps, who had landed with American assault troops on the eastern end of Omaha Beach. Despite being wounded in the arm, he continued filming, capturing the only motion picture footage taken on Omaha during the assault waves. But that famous film raises some fascinating questions. Where exactly was Taylor standing? What was happening around him at that moment? And how did the men in that footage manage to fight their way off D-Day’s deadliest beach? In this video, we’re going to investigate that footage in detail — using aerial imagery, unseen maps of the German defences, historical records, and the testimony of the men who were there — to reconstruct what really happened on this stretch of sand during the assault on Fox Green.
