Man gets released from prison – then is immediately arrested

► Amos Smith had just been released from prison. But his freedom was short lived. The 47-year-old didn’t make it past the prison gates before being arrested by Kent Police. Smith was found to have conned a man in his 70s out of nearly £15,000 as payment for removing trees and rubbish from his home in Twydall. Under a false name, Smith initially charged the pensioner £11,000 for the work in May and June 2025. Two months later he returned and asked the man for more money, and over the next five days marched him to the local shop to make withdrawals. Smith was arrested on 14 April 2026 as he left prison, having finished serving a sentence for similar offences. He was subsequently charged with two counts of fraud by false representation, which he admitted at Maidstone Magistrates Court on 29 June.
