Let's Play Galaga & Galaxian (Super Game Boy)

I wasn't alive during the Golden Age of video game arcades, but its impact on the entire industry was so profound that we still know of many of the classics today. While some of remain more relevant than others - Pac-Man being one example - that does not detract from how enjoyable those games were. After all, a game that wasn't fun didn't get money and thus, wouldn't survive. Galaxian was released in the 1979 and has a very simple premise. Your task is to defend against wave upon wave of aliens that are threatning the planet by shooting them with your space fighter. The aliens will swoop down on you in an attempt to either shoot you or ram into you. Extra lives are few and far between and the only real goal is racking up as high a score as you can. It was a huge hit and ultimately spawned a sequel released in 1981 by the name of Galaga. Galaga built upon the foundation Galaxian laid out and enhanced it in all aspects. The graphics are better, the audio more prevalent and distinct and the gameplay has been greatly improved. The aliens swoop into the stage as well as down to get you and they can even kidnap your fighter, allowing you the opportunity to get it back and attach it to your own, doubling your firepower. Extra lives are more plentiful and all in all, it's a better game. I say all this knowing full well that Galaxian walked so that Galaga can run and both have their merits, but Galaxian offers little that Galaga doesn't. The Game Boy port came out in the 90s and featured Super Game Boy support which you are seeing here. The Super Nintento enhancements bring both games close to how they were in the arcade, but the package is still perfectly playable and fun without those. Namco did a great job of porting this game and I'd of been really happy to own this as a child, but I was not so fortunate. Nowadays it's fairly inexpensive to get and lacks a battery backup, making it as feature complete now as it was on the day of release. If you want to play this on the go - as on the go as having a Game Boy on hand is compared to your phone and presuming this has a mobile port - then it's a pretty good option. As for what's to come after this, Peglin recently got some new content including a fouth stage that holds the true final boss. I shall attempt to get to this, though that's far easier said than done without the extra difficulty attempting to reach the fourth stage mounts up on you. See you next let's play!
