Shadow comes to the nest and he is looking at what is underneath Jackie - a special surprise is awaiting him! Shadow waits on the nest for Jackie to get up so he can see this Easter gift! Jackie finally gets up and Shadow looks down with love & amazement at his beautiful chicks and he can't wait to brood them! Jackie takes a break and Shadow shimmies down and around covering them under his warm brood patch. Brood patches develop in both the male and female bald eagle just before the incubation period (on either side of the keel over the breast muscles) - controlled by the hormones estrogen and prolactin. They stimulate defeathering and vascularization (formation of blood vessels) of the incubation patch. Progesterone stimulates the thickening of the epidermis. Development of these incubation (brood) patches is prompted by rising levels of estrogen. Birds use their body (metabolic) heat to incubate their eggs. They have developed a ‘brood patch’ to transfer and preserve heat to the egg. This featherless area develops a supplemental set of vessels that bring hot blood close to the surface of the skin. The feather tracts also allow the bird to ‘spread’ the feathers apart in order for the skin to be exposed - rather like a part. This brood patch works the same way now by providing the chicks with the warmth they need until they are old enough to thermoregulate their own temperatures.
