Byzantine Saints: Saint Plato the Confessor of Studion (5 April)

Discover the powerful life of St. Plato the Confessor, a fearless defender of the holy icons and a pillar of monastic reform in the early Church. Born in 735 to a devout Christian family, St. Plato inherited wealth but chose a greater treasure—a life fully dedicated to Christ. After giving away all his possessions and freeing his servants, he entered the monastic life, eventually becoming abbot and spiritual father to many, including his nephew St. Theodore the Studite. At the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787), St. Plato boldly defended the veneration of holy icons against the iconoclast heresy. His courage did not end there—he even excommunicated an emperor for unlawful marriage, suffering imprisonment and persecution for the truth. Despite hardship, St. Plato remained steadfast in prayer, humility, and obedience until his death in 814. He is honored as a Confessor of the Faith, a witness to the truth who endured suffering without martyrdom. 👉 What can we learn from St. Plato today?
