Ancient Dakota Fire-Making Was Ingenious 🔥

The Dakota fire hole was an underground fire system once used by Dakota people to produce steady heat with very little smoke. Two small pits were dug and connected by a short tunnel. One pit fed oxygen directly to the base of the fire, improving combustion and raising temperature, while the fire itself stayed below ground, shielded from wind. This design kept flames low, reduced light and smoke, and used minimal fuel. The surrounding soil helped regulate airflow and heat, making the fire stable and efficient even in harsh outdoor conditions. We do not own any of the content.
