A growing series of reported EV fires has seen vehicles destroyed, homes damaged and families forced to escape as fires spread from cars parked or charging close to residential properties. In one recent incident, witnesses reportedly heard powerful explosions before an electric vehicle was consumed by fire in Samut Prakan. Another case involved a BYD Dolphin reportedly catching fire while charging at a family home in Khon Kaen, forcing five people to escape before the property was badly damaged. Other reported incidents have involved electric cars catching fire after owners had already reported problems, along with consumer disputes over battery fires, vehicle safety and responsibility for the resulting losses. But the fires may only be part of the problem. Reports from Thailand suggest that insurers have become increasingly cautious about covering electric vehicles because of concerns surrounding battery replacement costs, accident repairs, total-loss claims and the difficulty of assessing damaged high-voltage batteries. So what happens when governments and manufacturers encourage people to buy electric cars, but insurance companies decide the risks are becoming too expensive? And when an EV fire damages a house, who pays for the property, the vehicle, the clean-up and the disruption suffered by the owner? In this video, I examine the latest EV-fire reports from Thailand and ask whether electric-car owners are being left to carry risks they were never properly warned about.
