Larry, The Downing Street Cat - "Hot Podium Guy"

It has come to my attention that the current heatwave has been particularly taxing for those who spend their days camped outside my residence. Not only did I make several carefully timed appearances during yesterday's morning entertainment, but I also filed two reports via CNN. In my final dispatch, I happened to mention that not one of the assembled media pack had thought to bring me so much as a single titbit. This observation was not universally well received. Apparently, journalists prefer to think of themselves as fearless guardians of democracy rather than a flock of overheated vultures squabbling over the best patch of pavement. Nevertheless, facts are facts, and sometimes uncomfortable truths must be aired. Now, I was only outside briefly. It was desperately hot and, as many of you will appreciate, I am wearing a permanent fur coat. One cannot simply remove a layer and continue as if nothing has happened. However, my fleeting appearances were evidently insufficient for some members of the press corps. Deprived of their principal attraction, they turned their lenses towards a young gentleman named Tobias. Tobias has now acquired the rather splendid title of "Hot Podium Guy." As someone who has spent many years navigating the treacherous waters of public attention, I bear him no ill will. Indeed, I am perfectly happy to share a little of my limelight. He appears to be a thoroughly decent chap and possesses the sort of robust good health usually found only in cartoon superheroes and exceptionally successful mousers. His responsibilities extend beyond simply wheeling out the Prime Minister's lectern, or Scratching Post Number One, as I know it. He is also involved in its construction. I should note that, from a feline perspective, it remains a somewhat disappointing piece of craftsmanship. While serviceable for constitutional announcements and political resignations, it lacks the texture and claw-retention qualities one ideally seeks in a scratching surface. Nonetheless, Tobias has become a familiar figure during many of the nation's most memorable political moments. He has been spotted preparing the stage for leadership launches, ministerial announcements, resignations, crises, and the occasional spectacle involving Boris. He even survived the era of the lettuce, which is more than can be said for some governments. Apparently, his first brush with internet fame came back in 2019 during another Downing Street departure. Since then, he has quietly become part of the scenery of British politics, a sort of human punctuation mark appearing before every major national drama. I wish him every success in the notoriously fickle world of public attention. Fame arrives suddenly, stays briefly, and usually leaves without paying for lunch. Still, I suspect we'll be seeing him again before long, no doubt wheeling out Scratching Post Number One for whatever festivities accompany the Burnham era. Until then, I remain Britain's most photographed political observer.
