Larry, The Downing Street Cat - Installed

Well, it's been another scorcher here in London. From silly o'clock this morning, hundreds of media types have crammed themselves into what is, for all practical purposes, my front garden. Humans have a remarkable talent for standing exactly where a cat was planning to sit. As if that weren't trying enough, breakfast was a distinctly rushed affair. "Sorry, Larry, we're busy." Busy? It's breakfast. There are priorities, and I'm fairly certain they begin with feeding the Chief Mouser. During my scheduled hydration break, I wandered into my former manservant's study. He was outside delivering yet another farewell speech, which seemed an ideal opportunity for a discreet inspection of the place, and, more importantly, a quick check of the bags being packed. One has to be vigilant. You never know when a departing Prime Minister might accidentally wander off with something belonging to the residence. I'm relieved to report that, after a thorough investigation worthy of the finest detective, I found nothing of value missing. Satisfied that Downing Street remained largely intact, I retired for forty winks. Given last night's relentless chorus of scaffolding, shouting and general human commotion, I felt I'd earned them. When I awoke, refreshed and ready to face the constitutional transition, I wandered into the kitchen in search of lunch. The place resembled the aftermath of a diplomatic banquet. Champagne bottles everywhere, trays of exceedingly expensive-looking food... and, after considerable searching, a few forlorn flakes of leftover salmon. Still, one mustn't grumble. They'll see me through until afternoon tea. Curious to see how events were unfolding, I peered out of the front door. To my surprise, it was almost peaceful. The crowds had vanished, the cameras had thinned out, and there was scarcely a journalist left tripping over a cable. Then it dawned on me. I'd slept through the entire arrival and speech. Oh well. I expect it was the usual collection of promises about change, fresh starts and bold new directions. Apparently, there was even something about a "circuit-breaker for Britain." I haven't the faintest idea what that means, although if it involves interrupting my feeding schedule, I shall be lodging a formal complaint. As long as my meals arrive on time and my nap rota remains undisturbed, I see no reason why the transition of power shouldn't proceed smoothly. Keep calm and Larry on.
