Heart Attacks Can Look Different In Women: Know The Signs
This video could save your life.
On the latest episode of unPAUSED, Elizabeth Comen, MD and I talk about how heart attacks often present differently in women than in men, and why that difference matters.
We’ve been conditioned by movies and television to expect crushing chest pain. But for many women, heart attacks don’t look like that at all.
They can show up as:
• Indigestion
• Unusual fatigue
• Jaw or neck pain
• Left arm pain
Women are twice as likely to call an ambulance for their husband than for themselves.
And once women arrive at the ER, they are more likely to be misdiagnosed, less likely to receive an EKG, and more likely to have their heart attack missed, sometimes with fatal consequences in the year that follows.
Too often, the default diagnosis is anxiety or a panic attack.
Knowing the signs isn’t just helpful. It’s lifesaving.
