After JFK was shot in Dallas on November 22, 1963, his body was taken to Bethesda Naval Hospital for an autopsy. During that examination, his brain was removed and preserved for further study. The official conclusion was that Kennedy had been struck by bullets fired from above and behind, supporting the case against Lee Harvey Oswald. But the medical evidence did not stay safely where it belonged. The brain was reportedly placed in a container, transferred through official custody, and eventually stored with other autopsy materials. By 1966, it was missing. Tissue slides and other related materials were also gone. The disappearance created several theories. Some believe the brain may have been taken because it could show evidence of a shot from the front, supporting the grassy knoll theory. Others point to Robert F. Kennedy, suggesting he may have wanted to protect his brother’s private medical history and keep sensitive information about JFK’s health and medications from becoming public. Then there is the unsettling photo problem. Years later, some researchers argued that the brain photographs in the National Archives did not appear to match descriptions of Kennedy’s damaged brain from witnesses who had seen it after the assassination. Even after later investigations and new document releases, the brain itself has never been found. The result is a mystery that sits at the center of the larger JFK controversy, where missing evidence, official secrecy, family privacy, and conspiracy suspicion all collide.
