Woman spent ‘emotional’ 21 months battling council over fine for dropped cigarette butt

What started as a cigarette butt outside Birmingham New Street station turned into a 21-month battle involving the council, the courts and a series of official mistakes. In October 2024, Tania Hemming says she stubbed out a cigarette on an ashtray attached to a bin outside Grand Central. She says the cigarette end then blew onto the ground, but a council enforcement officer accused her of deliberately littering and issued her with a fine. After nearly two years of battling, Tania has finally been given compensation by Birmingham City Council - but has lost money and missed work. She joins Ranvir and Kate in the studio.
