Die Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Werte von Null bis zum ersten Quartil überschreitet grad die Wahrscheinlichkeit von 25%. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Werte von Null bis zum zweiten Quartil (dem Median) überschreitet grad die Wahrscheinlichkeit von 50%. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Werte von Null bis zum dritten Quartil überschreitet grad die 75% Wahrscheinlichkeit. Je nachdem ob man Datenreihen oder die Daten in Klassen gegeben hat gibt es zwei Vorgehensweisen zur Bestimmung der Quartile.
