Happy shark awareness day! I may be a couple days late because of traveling through different time zones but everyday to me can be Shark Awareness Day! I may be a couple of days late because I've been traveling through different time zones, but honestly… every day is Shark Awareness Day to me. Every day is another opportunity to replace fear with understanding, myths with science, and indifference with appreciation. Sharks have been swimming our oceans for over 400 million years—surviving multiple mass extinctions, shaping healthy marine ecosystems, and playing an essential role in maintaining the balance of life beneath the waves. Yet today, many shark populations are declining because of overfishing, habitat loss, and the shark fin trade. The good news is that awareness leads to action. Every conversation, every educational post, every responsible shark dive, every person who chooses to learn instead of fear, creates another advocate for the ocean. I've been incredibly fortunate to spend thousands of hours in the water with sharks. What I've learned is that they are far more than the villains they've been made out to be. They are intelligent, curious, and beautifully adapted animals deserving of our respect—not our fear. If you've ever felt inspired by a shark photo, documentary, or encounter, let that inspiration become action. Support organizations protecting sharks, make sustainable seafood choices, speak up for science-based conservation, and help others understand why these animals matter. Because protecting sharks isn't just about saving one species—it's about protecting the health of our oceans. And healthy oceans mean a healthier planet for us all.
