Sensus Fidelium

Byzantine Saints: Hieromartyr Marcellinus, Pope of Rome, and those with him (7 June)

Today we commemorate the Holy Hieromartyr Marcellinus, Pope of Rome, together with the martyrs Claudius, Cyrinus, and Antoninus. During the brutal persecution of Christians under Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, Pope Marcellinus was arrested and threatened with severe torture. Overcome by fear, he committed the grave sin of offering incense to idols. Though he had encouraged countless Christians to remain faithful under persecution, he himself momentarily fell. Yet his story does not end in failure. Filled with profound remorse, Marcellinus publicly confessed his sin before a council of bishops. Clothed in sackcloth and ashes, he humbled himself and pronounced judgment upon himself, declaring himself unworthy of his priestly dignity. Returning to Rome, he openly renounced his act of apostasy before the emperor, cast aside the honors given to him, and boldly professed Jesus Christ. For this confession of faith, he was tortured and sentenced to death. Before his execution, Marcellinus prayed to the merciful Savior who forgives repentant sinners. He then willingly laid down his life for Christ, receiving the crown of martyrdom alongside Saints Claudius, Cyrinus, and Antoninus. His body remained unburied for thirty-six days until St. Peter the Apostle appeared in a vision to Pope Marcellus and instructed him to give Marcellinus an honorable burial, reminding him of the words of Christ: "He that humbles himself shall be exalted." The life of St. Marcellinus stands as a powerful witness to God's mercy. Even great saints can fall, but sincere repentance restores the soul and leads to holiness. His story reminds us that no sin is beyond forgiveness when we return to Christ with humility and contrition.
