Read all of the records https://shieldsofshame.com/alfonzowilliams/ Summary of the Alfonzo Williams Federal Indictment A federal grand jury in the Southern District of Georgia has indicted Burke County Sheriff Alfonzo Williams on six federal felony counts. The indictment was filed July 9, 2026, in case 1:26-cr-00047-JRH-BKE. Counts 1 through 5 charge Williams with Hobbs Act extortion under color of official right, under 18 U.S.C. § 1951. Federal prosecutors allege that Williams requested and accepted money from five separate individuals in exchange for dismissing their pending DUI citations in Burke County. The alleged transactions occurred between August 2021 and April 2022. The indictment identifies the people only as Victims 1 through 5 and does not disclose the amounts allegedly paid. The alleged incidents occurred during these periods: August 13 to September 27, 2021; September 12 to September 13, 2021; January 13, 2022; February 11 to March 9, 2022; and April 2 to April 12, 2022. Each count alleges essentially the same arrangement: Williams allegedly obtained money that was not due to him or his office in exchange for making a pending DUI citation go away. Count 6 is separate from the alleged DUI scheme. Prosecutors allege that on or about January 26, 2023, Williams knowingly transferred a Glock pistol to an individual while knowing, or having reasonable cause to believe, that the person had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than one year in prison. One important limitation is that this is a bare-bones indictment. It does not identify the five alleged payers, the amounts of money, the underlying DUI defendants, the officers who issued the citations, how the cases were dismissed, or the convicted felon who allegedly received the Glock. Those details will likely emerge through discovery, motions, additional court filings, or related public records.
