A surprise performance in ME 352B: Fundamentals of Heat Conduction

Ken Goodson, professor of mechanical engineering - and baritone – surprised students in his graduate-level heat transfer class in March by singing Figaro’s famous opera aria. 🎭 At Stanford, where he’s been since the 1990s, Goodson and his students develop cooling technologies for data centers, electric vehicles, and portable electronics. As an engineering student at MIT, and as a postdoc in Germany, Goodson pursued a parallel singing career. He double majored in music, held summer voice fellowships at Tanglewood, and moonlighted as an oratorio soloist in Boston. Goodson currently serves as Stanford’s vice provost for graduate education and over many administrative roles has helped foster a culture of freedom and creativity on the Farm. He also enjoys occasional appearances with ensembles like the Stanford Symphonic Chorus and the San Francisco Choral Society. “Stanford is an amazing place to bring music into your life, even if this is not your only area," Goodson says.
