Born in Los Angeles to a business oriented family, he branched off from their trajectory, taking a degree in theater and film at Cal State Fullerton. However, although he may have seemed like a theater kid on the surface, Jirard possessed other passions for the more newfangled media. The most notable video games and YouTube, a combination that was in the process of creating some of the internet’s most recognisable figures. One man wanted to be a part of that movement as much as anyone. Jirard’s channel was founded in 2012 as ThatOneVideoGamer. The channel would initially feature a variety of content, including “Why We Love Games”, and “Defend It!”. However, the one that seemed most ripe for content, and views was a series known as “The Completionist”, where Jirard would play a game until it was 100% complete, no ifs, and no buts. This show was originally produced by friend Greg Wilmot who also co-starred, however, following Wilmot’s rather frayed departure, many early episodes would be removed, leaving Jirard to mostly forge a path on his own. Over the years, he accrued a reasonable following, peaking at around one and a half million subscribers. Although it would be hard to describe him as one of the defining figures in the video gaming genre, he was a respected individual who possessed sizable clout within his industry, being a part of the gaming network Normal Boots alongside names like PeanutButterGamer and JonTron. He would even attempt to branch out into more mainstream forms of media, being involved in the ultimately unsuccessful relaunch of American network G4, hosting a couple shows, and even debuting his own show. If you haven’t heard of Jirard before the past couple years, or even this video you could be forgiven. The truth was that one and a half million subscribers, although impressive, was not particularly distinct in a genre where the ceiling was so high. Even his colleagues and collaborators had multiples of the count that someone like Jirard possessed, nevertheless, in spite of this, he had built a consistent long-term fanbase through a tight-knit community who appreciated his warm personality and philanthropic attitude. However, probably his crowning accomplishment was the founding of the charity event known as IndieLand.
