AutoTrader Answers: How to Check Your Tire's Tread Depth

It comes up faster than you think. The pain of the price tag for replacing your vehicle’s tires is still fresh in the mind and, yet, now that you think about it, it’s probably been five, six… or has it been seven years since you bought them? Is it time to replace your tires? There are a variety of reasons to replace your tires. Among them, cracking, drying, and good old father time. But, one of the most measurable reasons for changing your tires is tread depth. The depth of valleys in your tire’s tread pattern are an important factor in their utility. They help wick away water in the wet and grab onto snow in the cold. When your tires wear down (from use or misuse) and the valleys get too shallow, your tire’s ability to hold onto the road can be seriously impaired.
