Grâce à l’industrie sidérurgique, Gary connut une croissance rapide au début du XXᵉ siècle. Des milliers d’immigrants européens et afro-américains du Sud y vinrent travailler. Dans les années 1930-1950, la ville prospéra et devint un symbole de l’Amérique industrielle. Cependant, la désindustrialisation à partir des années 1960 entraîna un déclin brutal.
